Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

Moving story about life at rock bottom for the destitute. Sidibe and Mo'Nique do a good job in showing what it's like when life deals you a terrible hand, and the effort it takes to try and break away. Hits you in the gut.

Crazy Heart

This basically nothing more than The Wrestler with country music instead of wrestling. Only The Wrestler had a much better script. The story is unoriginal and tedious. The only good thing about the movie is its leading actor: no one can play a downtrodden country singing bum like Bridges.

The Young Victoria

Historically interesting costume drama, that could have been better had the script given more attention to the motivation and motives of the characters. Blunt and Friend are brilliant.

Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked)

Very funny, very British movie that brings back memories of the good old days of pirate radio. The script is chaotic and messy, but also engaging and humorous.

The Great Buck Howard

Enjoyable performance by Malkovich, who portrays a has-been magician. Pretty forgettable movie though.

Gran Torino

A strong performance from Eastwood, who portrays a likeable Dirty Harry in a very simple, old school script that works surprisingly well. All about tolerance and forgiveness.

A Single Man

Tragic and gripping story, beautifully told in a very sensory and sensual way. Firth is spectacular and has more than earned the BAFTA he won for his role, Moore is disappointing largely because of a terrible British accent. Promising directing and writing debut by fashion designer Ford, who has made the movie and its performers very tangible using colour, sound and close ups.
